Upgrading Your Home's Lighting: LED Conversions and Fixture Swaps

There is a well-established fact about vision that has real consequences for how a home should be lit: the amount of light reaching the retina declines substantially with age. A room that was perfectly comfortable at forty can be genuinely difficult to read in at seventy, and the usual response is to squint and assume it is your eyes rather than the room.
Until fairly recently, the fix meant a large electricity bill. LED changed that arithmetic completely, and a lot of Boca Raton homes are still lit as though it had not. There is a secondary benefit that matters in South Florida specifically: the old incandescent and halogen fixtures shed most of their energy as heat, and in a Palm Beach County summer your air conditioning was paying to remove it.
Buy lumens, not watts
The single most useful habit to change when shopping. Watts measure consumption, not output. LED products deliver far more light per watt, so the old mental conversion no longer means anything.
Look at the lumen figure on the packet instead. If a room has never felt bright enough, this is your chance to increase the lumens rather than replacing like for like out of habit, and to do it without increasing the load on the circuit.
Color temperature, where people go wrong
The second number on the box is measured in kelvin, and it determines whether light reads as warm or cold.
- Around 2700K is warm and yellow, close to the old incandescent look. Comfortable for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Around 3000K is slightly crisper and works well in kitchens and bathrooms.
- 4000K and above reads distinctly cool and clinical indoors. Fine for a garage or a workshop, jarring in a living room.
The mistake we see most often is mixing temperatures within a room, or even within one fixture. Three bulbs of three different vintages in the same ceiling fixture make a room look dingy in a way that is hard to put a finger on. Consistency matters more than which temperature you choose.
Where extra light is worth the most
Prioritize the places where poor lighting is a safety issue rather than an aesthetic one: stairs and any change of level, hallways, the route between bedroom and bathroom, kitchen counters where knives are used, the inside of closets and pantries, and the path from the driveway to the front door.
Under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen deserves a specific mention. Overhead fixtures put your own body between the light and the counter, so the work surface is in shadow exactly where you are working. Lighting under the wall cabinets solves it entirely.
The dimmer problem
If an LED flickers, buzzes or refuses to dim smoothly, it is usually not a faulty bulb. Older dimmers were designed for incandescent loads and do not work correctly with the much smaller electrical load of an LED. Replacing the dimmer with an LED-compatible model resolves it, and the bulb you were about to throw away is fine.
What is a swap and what is not
Replacing a fixture where a fixture already exists, on sound wiring, is ordinary work. Adding lighting where none exists, running new circuits, or installing recessed cans into a ceiling that has never had them are different jobs, and the last one in particular has implications for insulation and any fire-rated assembly.
